Special Services

MCCS provides two programs for the exceptional learner.  These programs provide specialized educational services in independent and small group settings to students who qualify for either gifted education or special education.  Student eligibility standards follow the standards set forth by the Georgia Department of Education.

Voyages of Young Achievers on Gifted Education

VOYAGE provides enrichment opportunities to the gifted child with an emphasis on creative problem solving and critical thinking in both cooperative and individual settings. The VOYAGE program is enhanced by a lab equipped with curricula and technology to meet the needs of gifted students. Approximately 10% of MCCS students in grades 1-5 qualify for Gifted Education as outlined by the Georgia Department of Education.

Students Obtaining Academic Resources

SOAR services students in grades 1-8 who qualify for special education services under IDEA 97 (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). This special services program is designed to meet the needs of the student:

  • Whose least restrictive environment includes a general education classroom
  • Who experiences academic difficulty due to a specific learning disability
  • Whose academic difficulty is not due to:
    - Motivation
    - Behavioral difficulties
    - Environmental factors
  • Who requires classroom accommodations through a Section 504 Accommodations Plan.

The SOAR program includes individualized curricula and instructional planning, curriculum materials, daily individual or small group instruction, and an instructional liaison for general education inclusion.
